Probiotics: Are they necessary?

Now on to probiotics. Probiotics are much different from prebiotics in that they are not carbohydrates found in fruits and vegetables, instead they are live microorganisms that you can find in fermented foods. These live organisms are already healthy bacteria in our bodies, by adding probiotics to your supplements, you are simply adding to the population already present in your body. These organisms are usually found in parts of your body that are open to the outside environment such as your digestive tract. Your large intestines use these bacteria to help complete the process of digestion. The bacteria feed on the matter in your large intestines to produce vitamin K and B12 which are absorbed into our bloodstream for other essential processes. Probiotics aid in kicking out those bad bacteria when they try to sneak in and make you sick. Almost like superheroes right?! There are three popular probiotics on the market:

  • Lactobacillus
  • Bifidobacterium
  • Saccharomyces boulardii 

The use of both probiotics and prebiotics is referred to as microbiome therapy. I know it sounds crazy but I promise it’s so important. The activity of certain bacteria addresses certain problems or conditions like digestive issues, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, etc. There are even few studies that prove taking these supplements aid in weight loss! It’s vital that when looking for a prebiotic/probiotic to do proper research on what you wish to address and which bacteria is important for that condition. Keep in mind that these are live microorganisms, you must take them with caution if you have a weakened immune system (maybe from chemotherapy) or if you recently had surgery and are still healing. If you’re unsure,  speak to your physician or dietitian before consuming these supplements.
